Blog #1: Topics for Consideration

Coming to a conclusion for what topic I was going to write about was quite troubling for me since I had two options, both interesting to me. The Bermuda Triangle and the disappearance of the Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 fascinated me. I have been curious about the Bermuda Triangle since I was drawn to it by a documentary I watched a few years ago. Taking this class is the best way for me to engage and discover more about the mysteries of the Bermuda Triangle.

The documentary about the Bermuda Triangle included many different cases about incidents that occurred there. While watching the documentary, I grew more fascinated as each case was being told. The Bermuda Triangle, also known as The Devil’s Triangle, is a section of the North Atlantic Ocean off North American in which many ships and planes have mysteriously disappeared. Where did they go? Was it the weather, or was it something else?

Theories range from wormholes to simple humans errors that have led to these disappearances. For this project, I want to look deeper into the theories and find out how they impact people's perception about the Bermuda Triangle. Do disappearances make people afraid, causing pilots to avoid the area? While researching more and more about the Bermuda Triangle, I discovered different theories, including human error, which makes me want to explore deeper into them. Is the Bermuda Triangle just a mystery of weather? Could there be more to the Bermuda Triangle than what meets the eye?

  1. I think you might discuss the "mythology" of the Bermuda Triangle, especially as it gets portrayed in films -- including Steven Spielberg's Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which opens with the airplanes that disappeared in the Bermuda Triangle -- Flight 19 -- which had not been seen since 1945.

The implication, of course, is that they had been captured by extraterrestrials somehow -- in the Bermuda Triangle.

I have sent you the interesting essay "Deterritorializing the Bermuda Triangle: Popular Geography and the Myths of Globalization" by Brett Neilsen to give you a sense of what an interpretive reading of the Bermuda Triangle might look like. I really like this concept of "deterritorialization" that turns a real space on the map into a space of mystery where supposedly fantastic things can happen. Let's talk about it.
