Extra Credit Assignment
The documentary film I chose to watch was Surviving Death by Leslie Kean. The episode that I focused on was episode 1: Near-Death Experiences, which can be found on Netflix. After viewing a presentation on Near-Death Experiences, I grew very interested in the incident and found the cases to be very compelling. This episode was an excellent part of the documentary and included many different cases regarding people that had near-death experiences. The film took its audience into the shoes of the near-death experience people and explained how it all took place. One of the many cases discussed was about Dr. Mary Neal, a spinal surgeon who drowned while kayaking in a South American river. She was encountered with people she did not know in heaven and was told: “it is not your time” and was revived after being gone for 30 minutes. Dr. Neal’s experience is exceptionally detailed and conveyed, making her story very compelling to me.
While watching the film, I came across Jose Hernadez, who had experienced near-death in which he saw his father and embraced him. While he was talking about his experience, he said, “Sometimes we may not be able to say something here, but we’re gonna be able to say it somewhere else.” For me, this just wrapped up the entire experience of near-death together and it was very well said. The entire movie includes meaningful statements from people who have had near-death experiences and how their experiences gave insight into the phenomenon. Overall, Surviving Death episode one is an excellent source for near-death experience cases and is very interesting.
